Family and friends turned out to bid farewell to showbiz legend Merv Griffin yesterday at a post-funeral reception that was held in the Beverly Hills Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton hotel, a landmark facility at the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards that Griffin once owned. A small street leading to the main entrance of the hotel from both boulevards is named Merv Griffin Way.

Those in attendence included tv and radio host Ryan Seacrest, Jeopardy's Alex Trebek, actor Dick Van Dyke, The Odd Couple's Jack Klugman, The Monkees' Mickey Dolenz, former First Lady Nancy Reagan, Wheel of Fortune's Pat Sajak and Vanna White and actresses Stefanie Powers and Donna Mills.

Comments

There have been questions about Nancy Reagan's choice of a white suit (instead of black) for Merv Griffin. In the United States, white is actually a perfectly acceptable color at funerals -- there is no disrespect intended. Merv was raised Roman Catholic and white is often worn by priests and family members to symbolize the hope of the Resurrection.
