Want to see a live mermaid? Go to the magical Weeki Wachee Spring — City of Mermaids in one of Florida's oldest tourist attractions which is now celebrating its 60th anniversary.

A cast of 19 mermaids and two mermen perform "The Little Mermaid and Fish Tails" nearly every day, interspersing choreography with quick breaths from compressed air hoses.

Who among us could perform smiling dance routines 20-feet-deep in chilly water for a half hour wearing uncomfortable, non-thermal costumes while occasionally grabbing a quick breath from an air hose? Not to mention fending off pesky turtles, show-stealing manatees and the occasional alligator. The performers regulate their buoyancy solely by controlling their breathing — no weight belts allowed.

Between shows, groups of recreational scuba divers are allowed to plunge into the spring, admire the natural and man-made props and scenery and view the entry tunnel and airlocks where the mermaids relax and change costumes between routines.

Following a 2003 dispute over neglect between Southwest Florida Water Management District and the former owner, The Springs is under threat of closure. At that time The City of Weeki Wachee officially took possession of the lease and immediately began working on the "War against Neglect."

Your support can be heard at www.weekiwachee.com — help the mermaids and the animals fight against closure and support "Save Our Tails!"
